Down South
I’ve been in North Carolina now for about a week and a half, and so far I’m having a great time. I never in a million years thought I’d end up south of the Mason-Dixon Line. However, many people I’ve met have told me that this Triangle area is very different from North Carolina in general. I imagine it’s a similar situation to how Bloomington is quite different from the rest of Indiana.
I’ve been at my new job just over a week, and I really like it so far. I’m excited that I’m part of an IT department here, rather than being the only tech person in a department of non-techies, which is the situation I had at my last position. And I get more gadgets here.
On a totally different topic, I have recently discovered the restaurant sanitation codes. All restaurants in North Carolina are rated by the health inspector, and they must display these ratings. Points are deducted for dirtiness, food temperature, food being old, etc. I noticed that the Burger King I stopped at for dinner tonight had the highest sanitation rating of any restaurant I’ve eaten at so far.
On the downside, my furniture and the majority of my belongings are still nowhere to be found. Supposedly, they’re still in the process of being moved, and should be delivered on Thursday. Or at least, that’s what the ever-elusive moving company finally told me the other day.
I am none too thrilled with this particular moving company. They told me that my things would be delivered within 3-10 days, and “closer to the 3.” However, it will have been 16 days by the time it all finally arrives. I’ve been sleeping in a sleeping bag on my floor. Good thing I’m a relatively low-maintenance kind of person.
I’ve never used professional movers before, and the only reason I tried it this time is because my new job is paying for a large part of relocation. I wonder if all moving companies are borderline shady? It seems everyone I’ve talked to has some sort of horror story. And I’ve never heard anyone say: “Oh yeah, I just loved my movers!”
